What does HEMA FREE mean..?
HEMA-FREE means a product, usually gel nail polish, builder gel, or acrylic which is formulated without Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate.
HEMA is a chemical commonly used as a binding agent and adhesive. While highly effective at making manicures durable and glossy, it is also a well-known sensitiser.
Repeated or improper skin contact with HEMA can cause severe contact allergies, resulting in itching, burning, or peeling skin around the nails.
Why do SGS choose to use HEMA-FREE products..?
Because there is a reduced allergy risk which is ideal for individuals with sensitive skin or those who have already developed an allergy to traditional gel products.
They are less harsh as these formulas tend to be gentler on the natural nail plate, reducing the dry, brittle feeling sometimes associated with frequent gel wear.
They provide a safer application as they lower the risk of developing a new, lifelong allergy for both home users and nail technicians.
Note: While switching to HEMA-FREE significantly lowers your risk of an allergic reaction, it is not completely foolproof.
You can still develop sensitivities to other chemicals and photo-initiators used in nail formulas, such as TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide).
HEMA is a major contributor to how well a gel adheres to the nail. Because it is missing, HEMA-free formulas require proper nail preparation (like gently etching the nail) to ensure they bond correctly and do not lift prematurely.
